What is Kanban?

Kanban is a flexible, effective, and simple approach to planning. By visualising your workflow and tasks with a Kanban board, you gain better insight into your processes and an overview of your workload. It consists of a single workflow of sequential statuses. It's project management, but without all the management. Simple, fast, and effective. Say goodbye to sticky notes and the card file on the wall. With vPlan, you can now execute in a fantastic and efficient way.

How does the Kanban view work?

All your cards, with or without dates, are displayed based on your statuses, which you can customize. The statuses are columns through which work progresses from left to right. The main difference compared to other views is that the Kanban view is not bound to a date. This means you're not dealing with a specific period in which you see the work. With the Kanban view, you see all your work sorted by status.

Set up your statuses

Every vPlan board has at least two statuses, but you're free to create more. These statuses become lanes in the Kanban view. You can use the lanes in various ways, so determine your own process. Easily move cards between lanes with drag and drop. Ultimately, the goal is to have your work end up in the last lane!

Choose what you want to see

Just like in other views, you can also filter in the Kanban view based on various data such as labels, status, and resources. Additionally, you can quickly search by title, description, or information in custom fields.

Manage by numbers

It's not just about the simple and effective display; Kanban can do more! We show the number of cards in each lane, giving you insight into your Work In Progress (WIP). This allows you to see exactly how much work is planned per lane for your team. Additionally, the Kanban view adds up the remaining hours of all cards in each lane, so you can see how many hours of work are remaining. This requires the use of activities within cards.

How to use Kanban

You can use the Kanban view for various processes to create more overview and peace of mind. From organizing an event, recruiting new employees to acquiring new clients. We'll show you with an example

The Kanban view in vPlan is an ideal way to display your selection process in different statuses. A new application starts in the 1st status 'New Applicant'. Then you let the candidate progress through the different statuses. This way, you know exactly where candidates stand and what still needs to be done.

Determine your active views

vPlan keeps developing and offering more possibilities, but always with ease of use and overview in mind. With the new Kanban view, we now offer 4 different views. You can now determine which view you want to see as default and which ones you want to hide. When you hide a view, you can always show it again. We won't delete any data, of course.

Column sorting

Previously, we sorted cards in the list view based on the planned date. Now, you can sort based on a column of your choice. Click on the column name to sort the cards accordingly. You can choose to sort in ascending or descending order. For example, a date column can be sorted with the earliest planned date at the top or the latest planned date at the top. When sorting by card name, labels, and resources, cards are grouped alphabetically. You can activate sorting for one column at a time.
